Reglan Injury
Neuroleptic Malignant
SyndromeReglan (generic: Metoclopramide) is a drug
prescribed for acid reflux disease. Reglan is most commonly prescribed to patients suffering
from gastro esophageal reflux, (GERD, Heartburn, Acid Reflux Disease).
The FDA has approved the drug for short-term
use (4 to 12 weeks) and only when conservative treatment fails. While the FDA has
approved Reglan only for short-term use, approximately 1/3 of patients are being prescribed the
medication for 12 months or greater. Long-term use can cause serious side effects
including Tardive Dyskinesia, a neurological disorder which causes involuntary movements of the
tongue, mouth, face, lips and sometimes arms, trunk or legs.
Reglan has also been linked to Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
(NMS). Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome is normally associated with anti psychotic
drugs, and is an extremely serious syndrome that usually creates a neurological
emergency.
Most patients develop Neuroleptic Malignant
Syndrome shortly after initial exposure to a drug. Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
symptoms include high fever, sweating, unstable blood pressure, stupor, muscular rigidity, and
autonomic dysfunction.
NMS is often fatal.
GERD Drug
Injury
A
severe personal injury or wrongful death caused by Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, Reglan,
drug injury, or similar GERD drug, can be very complex. You or your loved one may
be eligible for compensation for your severe harms and losses.
Keep in mind, however,
that drug companies often fight claims over drug product, often blaming the consumer or
prescribing doctor, even in those instances where the acid reflex disease drug itself
was flawed or defective and responsible for the injury or death.
If you or your loved one has suffered a permanent, devastating, personal injury or wrongful
death in the family caused by Reglan or similar GERD drug used to treat acid reflux
disease, then please contact a dedicated personal
injury lawyer at our firm to seek justice on your behalf.
