Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis

Erythema Multiforme

Dangerous side effects of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicine, and health supplements, can include the life-threatening condition known as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). This serious adverse reaction can lead to blindness, skin peeling away from the body (sloughing), or death.

Unfortunately, drug companies have pushed for and obtained FDA approval of many drugs without adequate clinical research and testing.  We also know that many drug manufacturers aggressively market drugs for specific uses not approved by the FDA and are concealing known harmful side effects from the FDA, physicians and patients. Unfortunately, less than 1% of all drug reactions are reported to the FDA.

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis

Some drug can result in severe life-threatening skin and immune system disorders, including Erythema multiforme and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis(TEN). TEN is a deadly allergic reaction, often caused by a drug, affecting the skin and mucous membranes, causing severe burning, blistering and sloughing of skin and tissues.

TEN Allergic Reaction

TEN may be caused by many drugs, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and health supplements (which are not categorized as drugs).

TEN can cause the skin to peel off in sheets, leaving large areas that look scalded.  The loss of skin causes required fluids to ooze from the raw, damaged areas which can easily become infected.

The following are the most common symptoms of toxic epidermal necrolysis, although each person may experience different symptoms:

  • painful, red area that spreads quickly
  • top layer of skin may peel without blistering
  • scalded-looking raw areas of flesh
  • sloughing or peeling away of skin;
  • discomfort or pain
  • fever
  • condition spread to eyes, mouth, and genitals.

The symptoms of toxic epidermal necrolysis may resemble other dermatologic conditions. Consult a physician for diagnosis.  Any age group can find themselves affected by Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
