Spinal Cord Injury Treatment
Does Food Dye May Hold Promise?
Blue Food Dye May Help Prevent
Secondary Injury
Who would've though that blue
M&Ms could hold the key to spinal cord injury treatment? Researchers may have found
the connection between "Brilliant Blue G" food coloring found in M&Ms and Gatorade and
prevention of secondary injuries in traumatic spinal cord injuries.
In spinal cord injury cases, there is
the initial traumatic injury to the spinal cord, which is then followed by swelling and a
secondary, additional injury to the spinal cord as the result of that swelling (which occurs
hours after the initial injury). This secondary injury typically worsens the
paralysis.
Apparently, the Brilliant Blue G, or
BBG, may stop some of that swelling that leads to the additional spinal cord injury and
paralysis. At least, according to some scientists at University of Rochester and reported
in the National Academy of Sciences: Science Daily: Common Food Dye May Hold Promise in Treating Spinal Cord
Injury.
