Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord damage occurs when the vertebrae in your spinal column or “backbone” fail to
adequately protect your spinal cord, mostly due to a fracture or dislocation of your vertebrae. The
spinal cord is made up of a bundle of nerves that runs down your back from the base of your brain.
These nerves control a variety of your bodily functions.

Different parts of the spinal cord affect different bodily functions. The spinal column consists
of a cervical section at the top, followed by the thoracic, lumbar and sacral sections. Generally,
the higher the location of the spinal cord injury, the more severe the resulting consequences,
especially paralysis and paresis (weakness).
Damage to the Cervical (c-spine) or Thoracic (t-spine) sections of the vertebrae and spinal
cord typically results in some form of paralysis.
There are hundreds of thousands of injured persons in the U.S. who suffer some form
of spinal cord injury (SCI) in the US. Spinal cord injuries generally occur as the result of
trauma, or a sudden blow to the spine. The leading cause is car accidents, which account for about
almost half of spinal cord injuries. Other causes include falls, as well as swimming pool
accidents (diving accidents), construction site accidents, and sports.
There is currently no cure for permanent spinal cord injuries. The goal of treatment is to
prevent further injury, usually by stabilizing the spine through neurosurgery or orthopedic
surgery. After a spinal cord injury, some swelling of the spinal cord typically occurs, affecting
the entire body. Some function may be regained over time as the swelling subsides.
Among others, spinal cord injuries may affect:
- body temperature
- blood pressure
- sexual function
- sensory perception
- bowel and bladder control
- ability to walk
- susceptibility to respiratory disease
If you or a loved one has suffered from a spinal cord injury due to negligence of another, then
you may have a legal claim to damages and other compensation. This may be the case, for example, if
the injury was the fault of a car or truck driver, a defective product, or dangerous
property condition.
