Radiologist Malpractice
A radiologist is a medical doctor (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) who specializes in the study,
diagnosis and treatment of disease through medical imaging.
There are many different forms of medical imaging devices, ranging from x-rays to more advanced diagnostic
films, including MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), CT (computed tomography) -- these have also been called "CAT
Scans" and ultrasound.
General Radiologists
Radiologists provide care in several ways, including assisting doctors with decisions about which studies to
order and interpreting the studies after they have been ordered and performed.
Radiologists play an important role in a patient's medical care because they are obtain information about a the
patient which often cannot be seen with the naked eye. Notably, many radiologists have no direct contact with
the patient, and instead interpret imaging films for other doctors and in the hospital at the request of other
physicians (also known as a radiology consult).
Most radiologists fall into this category, and are often called upon to interpret films to detect cancer, acute
injury, illness, or disease symptoms affecting the patient. Through medical imaging, radiologists are called
upon to identify all sorts of conditions, including fractures, detection of tumors, and to confirm proper placement
of surgical hardware.
Neuro Radiologists
Some radiologists focus their practice on brain and spine issues, and are known as neuro radiologists.
Interventional Radiologists
Some radiologists have secured additional training and are known as interventional radiologists. In
addition to ordering and interpreting studies, an interventional radiologist may also treat a condition order
disease with radiation or minimally-invasive image guided surgery.
Some interventional radiologists are known as Cardiovascular Interventional Radiologists (CVIR), or Neuro
Interventional Radiologists (NIR).
