Tire Blowout Accident
Attorney
What are known tire blowout safety tips?
If you are driving while there is a rapid loss of tire pressure or blowout, tire safety experts
recommend the following to maintain the vehicle balanced and under control
- Don'ts
-
- Any over reaction, including abruptly releasing your foot from the accelerator
or slamming on the brakes may result in a loss of vehicle control.
- Similarly, quickly removing your foot from the accelerator causes the
vehicle's weight to be transferred from the rear to the front tires, potentially
leading to loss of control.
- Applying brakes makes the vehicle further destabilizes the vehicle
- Do's
-
- gradually release the accelerator, after controlled, corrective steering
- look and steer in the direction you want the vehicle to go
- once stabilized, continue to slow down and pull over where you deem it safe to
do so.
These steps should be taken regardless of whether the front or back tire blows out. The main
difference will be that you will feel a front tire blowout more in the steering whereas you will
feel the force of a rear tire blowout more in the vehicle's body.
Why are tire blowouts and tire tread separations so dangerous?
A tire blowout or tire tread separation cause vehicles to lose control. There is a sudden shift
of weight and power, meaning the vehicle is unstable.
Tire tread separation increases the risk of rollover and collisions with other vehicles or
objects.
What causes tire blowouts and tire tread separation?
Most tire blowouts are preventable. Some of the principal causes of tire blowouts include:
- Road hazards
- Under-inflation
- Tire mismatching
- Tire design defect
- Manufacturing defect
- Aged tire

What is tire ageing or aged tire
Tires have a limited life of service, regardless of use or tread depth. This means a tire, still
in its wrapping, never used, and off the shelf, if outside its life of service, is dangerous
product, defective and should not be sold to a customer.
Ageing tires is a little known danger outside of the tire manufacturing industry and is likely
to continue causing a significant amount of tread separations. These tires can inadvertently put
into service after being stored in warehouses and garages, used on a vehicle that is not driven
often, or having served as a spare.
An aged tire is likely to be sold because it looks brand new, has brand new appearance, and
has adequate tread depth. There are usually show no visible signs of deterioration.
The age of a tire can be determined from the tire's serial or identification number, which is
molded into the tire's sidewall. Notably, until recently, the tire serial number and its age were
imprinted on the inside (i.e. facing the axle) of the tire. Even today, this number is not
easy for the average consumer to decode. Here's how to decode
the tire.
