Child Pool Safety
Swimming pool injuries and death and spa injuries
and death are among the saddest of all civil cases. Kids are splashing and having
fun. There is fun, happiness, smiles. Then tragedy strikes.
Swimming Pool
Safety
Every swimming pool and spa or hut tub owner must
put in place child safety features -- whether mandated by statute or building code -- or simply
by using common sense. Newer homes are required to have audible alarms installed that are
triggered or set off when doors onto the pool or lanai are opened.
Pool Barrier
Safety Fence
Every swimming pool, spa, and hot
tub, should have a child safety fence or barrier blocking minors' access to the pool, spa, or hut
tub, when the pool, spa, or hot tub is not in use. This is true regardless of when the pool,
spa, or hot tub was installed or when the home was built.
Children are curious. Remember
those days? We were all there once. Water is dazzling to kids. They want to explore. Just dip a
foot into the pool. Before you know it, a child can be completely in the
water.
A child can be submerged even
if parents or other adults are present and not paying attention, especially if there are there
other kids in the pool engaging in horse play.
Even children who can
swim can go under at the hands of stronger swimmers or as the result of childhood swimming pool
games.
It only takes seconds in a
swimming pool, spa, or hut tub for a child to panic and start swallowing water.
Drowning and Brain Injury
When a child is submerged in a
swimming pool, hot tub, or spa, the brain is starved for oxygen. Unconsciousness sets in.
Death or irreparable brain damage often results. Emotional devastation and financial ruin often
accompany such tragedy.
Be Cautious and Safe for Your Children's
Sakes: Tips
- Please play it safe. Watch your
children -- do not let them out of your
sight for any period of time -- ever -- if you have a swimming pool, spa, or tub at your
home. If your child is going to go swimming at a friend's house -- attend with
them. If this is not possible, make sure you insist that a competent adult -- who can
swim and knows CPR -- will be monitoring the pool activities.
- Also, when attending a party hosted by friends
or family, stand guard at the pool. Even if your child is a good swimmer. Why? Often, children
who cannot swim hold onto those kids who can. This is overwhelming for the able-child-swimmer,
and can quickly result in him/her being sucked under the water.
