This May Be Surprising to
You, But There Are Many
Circumstances When You Don't Need a Lawyer
I have never understood how so many
people can literally spend more time researching their dinner, or the ingredients on a cereal box, then they
spend on the important decision on whether to hire a personal injury lawyer,
and if so, who that personal injury lawyer should or will be. A serious injury claim can involve
lifetime changes and challenges, and so the decision on who should be your advocate and stand by your side can have
dramatic effects for years.
Instead, many people simply hire the
first personal injury attorney they see on television (or the one
who is on TV the most), or the lawyer with the biggest phone book advertisement, or the lawyer with an ad on the
back of a bus, or the lawyer who has a billboard on the highway; and do so without checking that lawyer's
background, who will actually handle the case day-to-day (non-attorney staff or a lawyer).
Good
people might even hire a "local"
lawyer, one whom they believe is the right choice because that general practice attorney has an office down
the street, even if that lawyer does not have experience in serious personal injury
matters, or is focused on volume (quantity) of cases instead of quality.
Does any of this make
sense?
While most injury lawyers claim to
have a "free consultation" -- and there is nothing wrong with this (we do it, too) -- you should ask
yourself:
Before you hire an injury attorney to handle your important
injury case -- whether that attorney is me or someone else -- think about your case, your needs, and what ask
before making your important decision. Hire the attorney only if you're satisfied
you've received honest and direct answers to your questions.
For example, have you suffered a serious or permanent injury?
Some examples of what I see as serious or permanent personal injuries (look in our Law Library as well as the Injury and
Illness Types link for a more complete list of examples) include:
Like any condition, there are degrees of severity. Some of these serious injury types may be
moderate but permanent, while others may be severe and catastrophic, such as TBI,
amputation injury, paralysis, cerebral palsy, blindness, and so on.
Any of the serious injury types in the Law Library would generally qualify for my
services at the damages level. Of course, we would then have to discuss the circumstances of your injury.
The bottom line, honestly, is that we limit our practice to representing individuals whose
claims we believe in, which tend to involve serious injury as the result of others' wrongdoing. If you
have a "small," or "minor" claim (i.e. one that does not involve serious personal injury), then we may be able
to refer you to an attorney whom we know who handles such claims.
If You Want A Lawyer for
Your Serious Injury Claim, Then Let My Experience Work for You
Since 1995, I have helped
clients in need through our justice system. Whether those clients were injured as the result of an auto
accident, truck accident, defective product, slip and fall, motorcycle crash, or medical malpractice, I
have been their advocate against negligent parties and insurance companies.
I also have had the great
benefit of serving as an Assistant Public Defender, which involved significant trial and courtroom experience,
and as a personal injury insurance defense lawyer, which provided experience in defense tactics and
strategy as well as insurance claims handling tactics.
Combined, I have significant
trial experience, litigation experience, and personal injury experience which may be of benefit to you in your
serious matter. Because I handled (and defended) catastrophic cases, personal injury claims, and wrongful
death claims inside and outside of the courtroom in various contexts (i.e. car accidents, motorcycle accidents,
truck accidents, premises liability, products liability, medical malpractice, birth injury, etc.), I can offer a
an honest assessment of where I believe you stand in your circumstances.
