Health Supplement Injury

Health supplements are a multi-billion dollar industry in the U.S. Many herbal supplements have beneficial properties that harmful prescription drugs do not. Similar to drugs, however, these supplements do have side effects which can cause serious health supplement injury.

Anything labeled “natural,” however, does not mean that the substance is necessarily healthy.  In fact, some natural supplements have been associated with very serious injuries, including liver damage, kidney failure, heart injuries, and even death.

• • This supplement has been used to increase the hormone testosterone in blood levels to boost performance. Purported dangers include increased cancer risk and higher risk of heart attack or heart damage.
• Aristolochic Acid
• • This supplement, associated with traditional Chinese naturopathic medicine, has been used to address eczema, endometriosis, and backache. There is risk of kidney failure by using this supplement.
• Bitter Orange
• • This supplement is known as a stimulant to increase weight loss. It is similar to other high caffeine and other metabolism boosters, such as Ephedra (which was banned by the FDA in 2004).
  • This supplement may result in high blood pressure, increased risk of heart arrhythmias, heart attack, and strokes with its use.
• Chaparral
• • This supplement is marketed as a "blood purifier," cancer cure, and acne treatment. It may, unfortunately, result in permanent liver damage.
• Comfrey
• • This supplement is consumed as a tea or herbal beverage or green beverage and used for stomach ulcers or as a "blood purifier."
  • The problem is that it contains harmful substances called pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which have been associated with permanent liver damage and death.
• Germander
• • This supplement is used in weight-control formulations. It can cause permanent liver damage.
• Kava | kava
• • This supplement is used to reduce stress and anxiety. It has been associated with permanent liver damage.
• Lobelia
• • This supplement is used for asthma, bronchitis, and coughing. It may cause breathing problems as well as higher heart rate.
• Pennyroyal Oil
• • This supplement is used as an insect repellent and disinfectant and internally for digestive and liver disorders. It has been linked to liver and kidney failure, nerve damage, and deaths.
• Skullcap
• • This supplement is used for reducing anxiety and relieving insomnia. It has been associated with liver damage.
• Yohimbe
• • This supplement is promoted to relieve men's erectile dysfunction and increase sex drive sometimes referred to as "herbal Viagra.”
  • It has been linked to increase in blood pressure, heartbeat irregularities, and heart attacks.

The list of dangerous health supplements, dietary supplements, and other types of "natural" supplement products is long.  Because the field is largely unregulated, false and misleading claims about the benefits -- without identifying the risks for consumers -- is commonplace.
