Paxil Birth Defect

Paxil (generic: paroxetine) is a best-selling prescription antidepressant drug. There is a serious birth defect risk, however, associated with Paxil consumed by a pregnant mom. The Paxil birth defect risk is especially high if an expectant mother took Paxil during the first trimester of pregnancy.

The FDA issued an alert in 2005 when the manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, reported birth defects in infants born to women who took antidepressants - including Paxil - during the first trimester of pregnancy.

The birth defects included the following:

heart malformations - ventricular septal defects (holes between the heart's two main pumping chambers)

heart malformations - atrial septal defects (holes in the walls of the chambers of the heart)
