If you are seriously injured in a crash involving an underinsured or uninsured driver, then your UM insurance carrier stands in the shoes of the at-fault uninsured/under insured driver. Accordingly, your claim and lawsuit will be filed directly against your UM insurance carrier for your compensation. This is why it is so very important for every Florida driver purchase UM coverage with high limits. In Florida, which does not even require drivers to carry automobile bodily injury liability insurance coverage, you cannot afford to go without this protection for yourself and your family. While insurance companies are required to offer you UM coverage, you are permitted (and sometimes even encouraged by the insurance agent) to reject this coverage, even though it is fairly inexpensive. Importantly, even if you have BI, if you have not purchased bought UM insurance, you will not be covered in any way, shape or form if an underinsured or uninsured driver harms you in a motor vehicle accident. We suggest that you carry a minimum amount of $100,000 BI coverage and $100,000 UM coverage. Also, if you have more than one automobile, then we strongly recommend that you “stack” your UM coverage. This means that in the event of an automobile accident, your available UM coverage is multiplied by the number of cars you own. For example, if you purchased $100,000 UM coverage and have 2 cars, and stack that coverage, you then have $200,000 in UM coverage available. UM coverage provides you and your family with protection fro uninsured motorists.
