Toyota Floor Mats Sudden AccelerationUPDATE: Toyota has announced a huge recall for sticking accelerator pedal.
[ORIGINAL ARTICLE FOLLOWS]
Following the tragic and fiery deaths of an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and his family (4 died in total) after reports that his accelerator was stuck because of a scrunched floor mat in his Toyota vehicle (See report Toyota orders all floor mats inspected after fatal Santee crash), Toyota reportedly issued a recall --Toyota to recall 3.8M vehicles over floor mats-- of its vehicles containing the mats.
Then, Toyota said there was no recall: Toyota to Media: No Floor Mat Recall Yet.
Toyota may have a problem here, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA, in conjunction with Toyota, previously issued a recall in 2007 for a similar issue, i.e. driver side floor mats causing rapid acceleration: Notice of Recall: 2007 - Toyota Floor Mats & Acceleration.
If the Toyota floor mat is susceptible to becoming unsecured during normal driving conditions, and then lodging against the accelerator, causing sudden acceleration, then lives are at risk. If the floor mat fastener or other device to secure it firmly to the floor does not work under normal conditions, then the product may be defective.
A product defect which leads to personal injury and death -- particularly when the company knows about the issue, and at a minimum has presumably known about it since before recall from years ago – is inexcusable.
We currently know of four victims – a young family wiped out -- of a deadly and most tragic crash in California. The off-duty Trooper called for help on his cell phone, describing the sudden acceleration as it was happening. Action has to be taken, and Toyota should do the right thing to protect consumers: recall the floor mats and fastening systems.
